The Rotary Club of Americus, Georgia received a district grant to fund the manufacturing and distribution of chemo-port pillows
The Rotary Club of Americus, Georgia is proud to share that they have received a district grant to fund the manufacturing and distribution of chemoport pillows to the Phoebe Sumter Oncology Clinic. These pillows were designed with the purpose of easing discomfort for patients who have had chemotherapy port-implanted. The chemo-port pillow makes it easier for those in cancer treatment to wear seatbelts without causing pain or pressure on the implantation site. This generous grant allows the Rotary Club to purchase more than 50 chemo-port pillows, which will be donated to Phoebe Sumter Hospital, allowing many more cancer patients to benefit from its comfort and relief. It is believed that this chemo-port pillow will help improve the quality of life for all individuals receiving chemotherapy treatments at Phoebe Sumter Oncology Clinic.
Chemotherapy Port Pillows Funded by District Grant
For individuals with a port-a-cath, a seemingly small pillow can offer immense comfort during medical procedures such as drawing blood or administering treatments like chemotherapy and antibiotics. The Port Pillow Project, initiated by the Americus Rotary Club in partnership with the Phoebe Sumter oncology clinic, aims to alleviate the discomfort caused by seatbelt irritation at the chemo port site.
Every year, the clinic administers approximately 2,300 chemotherapy treatments to over 350 cancer patients. The Americus Rotary Club successfully secured a district grant to produce and distribute 415 chemo port pillows to patients in need. These pillows, available in various colors and designs, are meticulously crafted by a local woman-owned clothing manufacturer in collaboration with dedicated Rotarians who volunteered over 100 hours to this noble cause.
Inspired by her own personal experience with a port, past president Angela Smith recognizes the significant impact of a simple yet essential item like a port pillow during the challenging journey of cancer treatment. Designed with Velcro straps for easy attachment to a seatbelt, the pillow can be adjusted to accommodate ports located on the right or left side of the chest, serving both drivers and passengers alike.
The Phoebe Sumter Oncology Clinic received 350 donated port pillows, while additional pillows were distributed to various clinics throughout the region. Americus Rotary expresses gratitude to the Rotary Foundation and acknowledges the invaluable support provided by District Grants. These port pillows act as a free resource, offering much-needed comfort and solace to men, women, and children alike during a time of tremendous emotional and physical upheaval.
The Port Pillow Project is an easy-to-understand, easily accessible resource tailored to the needs of the cancer community. It serves as a beacon of support, providing comfort and companionship when it is most needed.
